Also what else could I be thinking of? So, I throw the question over to your vastly greater knowledge of these beasties on what to do. Going to the tip in an L is a pain, you have to prove it's your only car or the council assume you're a business and charge.
My old Y2k model liked a drink too. Worst thing I found was the rear only drive 'till you select 4x4. Be careful on wet roundabouts unless you can turn a steering wheel at lightning speed to catch it. Long rear body not as practical as it seems with a canopy on, nothing seems to fit lengthways and towing a heavy load can get you nervous, they sway as the towbar's a long way from the axle.
Watch out for broken leaf springs. Watch out for the low emission zone rules if you're near London too. I reckon the price of these will crash very soon. Went for a Disco this time and I'll be towing a track car sooner or later and my trial bike sooner.
Better MPG, just more rust. Chainguy 4, posts months. Regards price crashing, I've already seen early ones cropping up for little more than beer money. Can't be bad if it's almost free, can it? Radebe posts months. My business has had 3 L's in the past and theyve been okay all from new good off road, bad on road, mpg bhp and not much pulling power.
A half new engineer rebuild, bent inlet valve on cylinder 4. Selling it next week I think. Thanks for the info so far though. If you get a looked after 1 it should be fine, same as most things in that uncared for ones will bite you I used it for plastering stuff and it was fine, 6x3 boards go in with truckman top on, just raise 1 end.Do you own a Mitsubishi Triton 2.
Do you have your eyes on a humble second hand Triton in this range? If so, then the following may be relevant to you. The Triton roamed this planet from as early asand since then they went through many facelifts and engine-lifts… The earliest versions were not as powerful as that of the current generation. Your everyday Triton 2. This is actually pretty average, compared to other vehicles of the same size, but nonetheless, the Triton engines are renowned for their longevity.
They are very stable and due to their long history, are reliable in many instances. All in all, the Triton have a good reputation. Still, it is a vehicle, vehicles undergo wear and tear and vehicles have issues. The Triton may have been around for quite a while, and yes, it is not your typical class-leader of a bakkie, but it is reliable and, to say the least, economical to a decent degree.
Nonetheless, it does have its issues, just as most any other vehicles have. Whether you possess a Tritonor have your eyes on a new or second hand one, then it may be wise to be aware of these issues. Knowledge regarding them may assist you in identifying issues beforehand, and what do I always say: prevention is at the end of the day, much better than cure what else did you think?
Let us start with vibrations in the steering wheel. You experience unnecessary but at times also excessive vibrations in the steering. What can be the cause? Well, we hope it was not due to the corrugated road you were driving on… When such vibrations occur and you are not on a corrugated road…you may be told that it is the shocks or the suspension. It may indeed be the problem, but it is worthwhile to first have the steering column checked.
There are usually two bolts that secure the column just underneath the dashboard. These may become slightly loose, and may require tightening, or it may even be that the entire steering column requires replacement. That being said, a vibration in the component responsible for steering an entire mass of metal and plastic, is not safe, so have it checked and fixed.
As a Triton owner, you may also experience that the vehicle just dies while idling. When random idling issues such as this cross your path, you may wonder whether it is electrical or mechanical in origin. Well, it may be both.
Check the guide vanes on the turbo and ensure that it is not clogged with a build-up of carbon. The build-up of carbon in some components can cause many headaches for vehicle owners. Check the turbo diaphragm too and ensure that the exhaust gas recirculation EGR vale is clean. You may, at the same time, consider checking all vacuum pipes on the inlet.
The pressure sensor for the diesel to the injectors may also be a cause for the idling to cut out. Finally, have the engine control unit ECU cleared and the injectors recalibrated, this may resolve the issue as well. The most important point of this discussion, is to address this issue, you definitely do not want to be left stranded and then blame the vehicle, now would you?
Any problems changing gears? If you experience any difficulty in changing gears, whether it be that it grinds during gear change, or does not want to go smoothly into gear, then you should consider to have a reputed service centre, such as ourselves, have a look at the clutch plate, pressure plate and bearings. Some clutches may last you more than a km, some may not. If you experience frequent clutch problems on the Tritonyou may consider replacing the clutch with a heavy duty clutch, but that is a choice entirely left up to you.
Have you ever felt a sudden and immense loss in power while driving? There are some reasons why this may happen. Can it be due to a clogged fuel filter or maybe the actuator acting up? Maybe it is even due to a failing turbo!
Do yourself a favour and inspect the pipes and clamps on the turbo itself.Japanese pickup trucks like the Mitsubishi L have a formidable reputation when it comes to build quality. The number of Mitsubishi L problems reported compared to its rivals is quite low, but there are a couple of niggling common faults. In this article, we list the most common Mitsubishi L issues.
It was the most comprehensive survey on pickup truck reliability every carried out, with over respondents. In total, the owners had amassed over 24, real-world mileage, and the combined age of all the pickups in the survey was around 1, years.
The Mitsubishi L leaf springs are known to crack if the owner regularly carries heavy loads or tows heavy trailers and is usually signalled by a regular knocking sound coming from either of the rear wheels. Fixing it can be expensive, as the whole housing — including bushes — usually needs replacing on both sides, as just replacing on one side can lead to a lopsided truck. However, it is known to fail quite early and leak, which results in the smell of anti-freeze working its way into the cab and the fogging of interior windows.
Problems with the engine overheating can also affect the head gasket, which another common component failure on the Mitsubishi L Owners should be aware of a bubbling sound once the engine has been turned off; this is a sign of the radiator failing which also leads to head gasket breaking.

Common problems for the Mitsubishi L200
Thread starter Alistair Kinghorn Start date Dec 27, Alistair Kinghorn Active Member. Word of warning to all L owner if you hear bubbling water when you switch of your engine or have problem with your heating get it checked at garage as the radiator collapses in the inside then takes out your cylinder head gasket, mine is a new shape with 50 on the clock you could buy yourself a few days on the hill on stags with ponies and accommodation with the bill I got!!!!!
I had the same trouble with mine when I turned it of and that cost a fortune the garage wanted to fix it so i brought a new head everything and it only cost me to do with a friend of mine. But with l thats a common fault so i never have 1 again it all be a hilux next time.
You can't post this, they're japanese!!!
Mitsubishi L200 review (1988-2006)
You're only allowed to slag land rover products off, everyone knows that. What reg we suppose to be looking at??
Ranger22 Well-Known Member. New shaped one, 50k on the clock can't be that old. Just mine is 57reg old shape. The hilux had to go.
People take the EGR off and that seems to stop any problems like these. Mine has on the clock and has shown no signs of any failure and it still has the EGR on it. Didn't know that the new shape were having these problems. Wonder what the cause is? The cause is a failing in the radiator which then causes the cylinder head gasket to blow and funny enough the new gasket is twice as thick.
What a surprise! Last edited: Dec 27, Norrie Well-Known Member. The head gasket problem is well known to Mitsibishi, they are on head gasket Mk3 for repairs nowOriginal Poster. Search My Stuff What's New 3 12 24 Prev of 3 2 3 Next. Having done a bit of research I have found some terrible owner's write ups for pretty much all the pick-ups on my shortlist.
Anyone have any knowledge? SmokinV8 posts months. Have just sold my 53 warrior and bought a 57 navara, so what d'ya wanna know?? GravelBen 14, posts months. Down here in NZ where 4wd utes are the vehicle of choice for the vast majority of farmers, tradesmen etc the Mitsi isn't really even considered an option by most, they have an overriding reputation for poor reliability and being expensive to fix when they do go wrong.
For most of the last something years the Hilux has been favoured over the Navara as the default option, but with the current models that has reversed slightly and the Navara seems current favourite by a small margin. Justin Miles posts months.
I don't particularly like the L at all I probably didn't like driving it becasue i'd already conditioned myself into that mind-set. Who knows? Anyway, that leaves the Navara or the Hilux. My inclination would be the Hilux, although the Navara is a fantastic truck. I couldn't really fit a Rizzler paper between the two so dig deep, pull out a penny, and flip it!
Whatever you get, I'm sure you'll love it. Have fun! TIS posts months. Always a fan of the older L but didnt fancy the servicing intervals of the 2. I too would like to loose the eurobox and get a doublecab pickup. WOuld also like the option of throwing a set of MT tyres on it and getting dirty occasionally on Salisbury Plain Edited by jvaughan on Friday 27th June Sixpackpert 4, posts months.
Had my new shape L 18 months now and would never look back. Never missed a beat in 34, miles. Servicing every 12, miles. Comfortable, best driving position of any pickup I've been in. Good off-road with normal tyres, very good with some proper mud pluggers on.Mitsubishi L prices. What to look out for. L maintenance. L pick-ups for sale. The Mitsubishi L Series 4 pick-up is able to haul and carry where normal vans would falter, making it among the most versatile commercial vehicles for sale.
The fact it sells in large numbers to non-commercial buyers as an alternative to conventional SUVs underlines the breadth of its ability and relative civility - the L is an easy vehicle to drive considering its incredible capability. Mitsubishi actively sought such buyers too, adding the luxurious Elegance specification when the fourth-generation L was introduced in March Other trims offered included the utilitarian 4Work and 4Life choices, while Warrior, Barbarian, Animal and that top-spec Elegance trim - as well as countless special editions - offered decent levels of luxury and specification in this rugged machine.
The fact pick-up trucks with payloads exceeding one tonne, as the L does, are considered light commercial vehicles in the eyes of HMRC means there is some fairly advantageous tax breaks over a conventional car. It was standard on the Animal trim and above but offered as an optional extra on the more utilitarian specification levels.
Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic; the latter had a driver selection for first and second gears and an overdrive, useful for those using the towing up to 2. All are four-wheel drive, Mitsubishi very proud of its Super Select 4WD system, which allows the driver to select on the move up to 62mph. Inthe L gained the option of a five-speed automatic, while power was increased to PS. There was also a very slight restyle inside and out, with the exterior getting new fog lamp housings and a redesigned grille.
Advertised fuel economy for the 2. However, according to Real MPG submissionsmanual versions are the most-efficient. A lot of problems with Ls arise due to people not changing the fuel filters and putting cheap diesel in without the lubricants and cleaners. The gasket seals can leak, though it is always recommended to use original parts, as pattern ones typically end up failing and leaking. Other known issues include suction control valves on the fuel pumps, which is related to poor fuels.
Only abused examples will show any signs of corrosion. And even then it will have to have been very poorly maintained. The front suspension is double wishbone, the rear being leaf springs.
